Funerals
(General)
Be sure to let your friends and family know what your plans are for your funeral. If you only mention them in your will, it may not be read until after all the funeral arrangements have been made, and your friends and relatives may be vulnerable to manipulation by greedy and manipulative morticians.

Shop around widely, and always ask if there will be any extra charges.

Don't be ripped-off on the cost of the casket. Choose a "minimum container" and drape it with attractive material of your own taste.

Have someone help you resist subtle . . . and not so subtle . . . pressures to spend huge amounts of money when faced with manipulative salespeople.

Cremation is cheaper than burial, and you can scatter the remains wherever you choose.

If you plan a memorial service without the body present, there is no need for embalming, expensive caskets, etc. Disposition of the body and commemoration are two different things and can be separate events.

If the body is donated to a medical school, there may be no cost at all. And cremated remains may be returned to the family after scientific study.

Don't waste money on "coffin vaults" and "outer burial containers". The casket will soon be covered by lawn. Also, a "sealed" casket will interfere with the natural dehydration that would otherwise occur.

You may not need to use the services of a funeral director. Depending on the laws in the state where you live, you can choose a more meaningful way to say goodbye.

What to say at funerals:
Express your sympathy to the family by saying how sorry you are for their loss.
It is always nice to share a fond memory with the family at a funeral. Nothing too humorous and certainly not vulgar. "My favorite memory of your loved one is …".
