While reading and thinking, say it aloud. It helps the brain make your knowledge more real.   [guest]

We learn one simple idea at a time. This is also the best way to communicate.   kellyjones00 (593)

Vocabulary:
  • Read, read, read. This is the best way to increase your vocabulary. Most words are learned from the context they appear in, so try to figure out the meaning of new words from their context.
  • Use your new words. Research shows that it takes from 10 to 20 repetitions to really make a word part of your vocabulary.
  • Make up as many associations and connections as possible. And say the word aloud to activate your auditory memory. Relate the word to words you already know.
  • Get in the habit of looking up words you don't know. If you have a dictionary program on your computer, keep it open and handy.
  • Use mnemonics ( memory tricks). Create little stories or pictures to help you remember difficult words.

Taking examinations:
  • Look over the whole exam first, so that you can predict how long it will take you to complete each part.
  • Read the questions carefully so that you don't answer a question that is not asked.
  • Answer easy questions first, and leave the difficult ones till last.

Starting a university: You won't need lots of money.* Advanced education is all about thinking, and is stimulated by an excellent library, as well as presentations by students on their research.

* Technological research is funded by investment, but reasonable prototypes can be made on a small budget for investors. For instance, some investors may be successful graduates operating independently from the university.

General Tips:
— Only students who want to study should participate. Most students can support their own study by part-time work relevant to their degree. A university-zone currency can help with trade/service exchanges.
— There are no classes or assignments, except for what the students arrange in a self-directed way. Advanced students can help less advanced students, so no one stagnates.
— Graduation is based on periodic cross-examinations by advanced students and graduates, and examinees may challenge grading, but if the grounds of the challenge are shoddy, the student cannot graduate to the next stage. Plagiarism and lack of progress are also reasons for stagnation.
— The university is a place for thinking and understanding, not for meeting husbands or losing virginity.
— There is no quantity or time limit to a degree, but stagnation attracts fines or penalties.
— University administrators should be regularly cross-examined by ethics and philosophy advanced students, who may fire them.
— Students' part-time occupations should be rotated, exposing them to a variety of life experiences. E.g. butchering, farming, remote first aid, trawling, surgery, genetic engineering, food preparation, forestry, terminal condition euthanasia, and other "dirty" jobs.
— University libraries should be mostly virtual (internet-based), to avoid an "institution" or "ant-colony" atmosphere, while presentations and examinations should be personal to aid in learning by stimulating the different senses.   kellyjones00 (593)

When taking notes from a text book first read the book and mark important points with a pencil. This way the context of the material is not lost from stopping to write notes. Once finished go through and summarise these important points in your notes.   Spud (21)

The SQ3R method: SQ3R stands for Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review. Survey means get an overview. Questioning things will help you to draw links between things, which will help you to remember them. Reciting means recounting, or summarizing what you have learned. A review is survey of what you have covered, making sure it all fits together properly.   thesource (378)

Multiple inputs are important when studying. Don't just read, but also write, and listen to others, and talk to others, and read aloud to yourself. Activate all parts of your brain. Sometimes you can remember what you have heard, but not what you have read, and what you have heard can trigger a memory of what you have read.   thesource (378)

Target oriented studying: When studying for exams, try to predict what the examiner is going to ask, and pay particular attention to being able to answer those questions. Lecturers usually drop subtle, and not so subtle, hints as to what they especially want you to know. Pay heed to these. You may also be able to look at the kind of questions that were asked in previous exams.   thesource (378)

Highlighting: When outlining books or notes, use a highlighter rather than underlining.   thesource (378)

Essay examinations: Try the "memory dump" technique. If permitted, write down everything you've memorized: facts, names, dates, ideas, events, and so on, before you do anything else. Sometimes reading through the essay questions can distract you from what you've studied. The "memory dump" technique requires that you write down everything possible BEFORE you begin writing essay answers. This way, you are less likely to forget something important.   thesource (378)

Language methods: For a long time I thought vocabulary was an important part of language acquisition, until I discovered the Langenscheidt German-English translation method. This method from the early 1900s goes far beyond the simple concept of words that mean certain things. Vocabulary is deemphasised very heavily in that method, to the point where it can come out unfettered.

The method encourages a holistic approach - as well as a molecularisation of language. A piece of writing might say very little, or a great amount. The words must be perfectly spelt, but it is the writer's personality that is of utmost importance. If the belief is there, the goal is already reached. This method inspires confidence in writers, and is greatly enjoyable, which is why the company is still around today 150+ years since it started in 1856.   myxlfidian (150)

Caffeine and chocolate: If you drink tea, coffee, or eat chocolate while studying for an exam, then you should also drink tea, coffee, or eat chocolate during the exam, because you will remember things better by recreating the conditions when the memories were laid down. The same goes for drinking alcohol.   Kevin Solway (173)
