The late 1800s vs modern times:

I think its fascinating to go back and read late 19th Century works, including bilingual dictionaries and non-fiction. I tried to learn German from this era and was surprised at how generous they were at that time. The language makes you work hard, but then they let you say whatever you want. Today it's the opposite: comfort and ease above all but you can't say two words against anything. It's very stifling, and it fact it leads to less self-control, not more. As Japanese Zen Master (Shunryu Suzuki) once said, "To give your sheep or cow a wide open space is the way to control him". Put yourself in a cage and you will never be controllable.   myxlfidian (150)
