Breathing: Low amounts, but high pressure air. To get rid of all the stale air, either breathe out at the end of a phrase, then wait til the end of the next phrase to breathe in. Or, at the breathing point, do a rapid breathe-out, breathe-in.   kellyjones00 (593)

Embouchure: To direct airflow into a tiny but forceful stream, very little of the lips should show around the double reed.   kellyjones00 (593)

Double reed: This is the key to getting the sound-waves vibrating evenly, so should be good quality. Learning to make your own can save on cost of buying every few months.   kellyjones00 (593)

The key to playing good darts is practice, practice and more practice. Keep your interest and enthusiasm by playing variations of the basic game.   [guest]

Be well-balanced and relaxed, with your weight comfortably distributed to both feet, so that you tire less quickly, and will have a more repeatable action.   [guest]

Not too big: Don't get a television that is too big for your room. If you don't have a very high resolution picture, you will see all the flaws in the picture. Sometimes a smaller screen effectively gives you a better picture! In addition, you might not like the way a large screen can tend to dominate a small room.   Kevin Solway (173)

LCD vs Plasma: Plasma screens use more electricity and run hotter than LCD screens. Plasma screens display better and more colours than LCDs. Plasma screens refresh the picture faster than LCDs. Plasma screens are not so good in bright rooms because of the glare off the glass panel. LCD televisions are easier to set-up and more robust than plasma screens. LCD screens can display higher resolutions. Plasma screens are only available in large sizes. LCD screens are better for connecting to your computer. Plasmas may have a shorter lifespan (become dimmer) faster than LCDs.   Kevin Solway (173)

LCD vs DLP: (Liquid crystal display vs Digital light processing). DLP has faster image refresh rates. DLPs are lighter, but take up more space, for the same screen size. DLPs are cheaper in the short term, but require bulb replacements every once in a while which adds to the cost. While bulbs should last a few years under optimal conditions, in real-life usage, turning on-and-off, they may only last 3 - 6 months, and cost a lot to replace. Some people think that DLPs produce images that can look "artifical" or "processed". DLP sets may show unwanted "rainbow" effects. LCD may show uwnanted "screen door" effect. DLP sets may be more power efficient.   thesource (378)

Screen resolutions: It may not serve you to buy a 1080 resolution set (as opposed to 720), since you probably won't notice the extra resolution unless your screen is extremely large, or you sit very close to the screen when viewing. Also, there's currently not a lot of full HD content available — though there probably will be in future.   thesource (378)

Choosing a reed: A soft or medium-soft reed is best for beginners. All reeds are different, and can be pitched flat or sharp, bright or dull, resistant to vibration or flexible.   kellyjones00 (593)

LCD vs CRT: Even though LCD screens may be somewhat more power efficent than CRT (cathode ray) screens, since the screen size can be much larger, they can actually use a lot more power.   Kevin Solway (173)

Maintenance: Things that need adjusting and replacing: key pads to seal off holes, screws, cork tenons. Use a narrow pointed slip of cigarette paper to test the firm seal of the key pads. If not held-in tightly, the pads or related arm screws need replacing or adjusting.   kellyjones00 (593)

Fingering: there are two alternatives each for F and D#. Keyed F goes well with E, forked F goes well with D and flat keys.   kellyjones00 (593)

Viewing distance: If you sit too far away from your high-resolution screen you won't be getting the benefit of the high resolution — because beyond a certain distance the human eye can't resolve it. You may need to sit as close as 2 - 2.5 metres away from your screen to get the maximum effect of a high-definition picture, or a bit further away for standard definition.   thesource (378)

Buying: Don't buy a big-screen tv just prior to a major sporting event, like the olympics, or you are likely to be paying an inflated price.   Kevin Solway (173)

Being a comedian is about openly juxtaposing an everyday, real, normal event with private thought and imagination. It is more about the unwieldy closeness of the two, than the shocking disclosure.   Panoculus (40)

Comedy shouldn't leave a sour taste in your mouth, as when the comedian has contempt of 'lower mortals'. Good comic vision can get close to the humorousness in any person, closer than others dare.   Panoculus (40)

Main > Entertainment > Music > Gamelan
Gamelan music is cyclical, with expanding or shrinking time. 'Slower' is time expanding, where a single beat splits into many beats. A song may have one part made up of segments, like a clockface made of its hours, and the part is repeated cyclically many times - expanding and shrinking - to make the song.   kellyjones00 (593)

Gamelan has frontline and orchestra instruments. The frontliners are leaders, ornamenting the melody of the orchestra and signalling where to alter tempo.   kellyjones00 (593)

The late 1800s vs modern times:

I think its fascinating to go back and read late 19th Century works, including bilingual dictionaries and non-fiction. I tried to learn German from this era and was surprised at how generous they were at that time. The language makes you work hard, but then they let you say whatever you want. Today it's the opposite: comfort and ease above all but you can't say two words against anything. It's very stifling, and it fact it leads to less self-control, not more. As Japanese Zen Master (Shunryu Suzuki) once said, "To give your sheep or cow a wide open space is the way to control him". Put yourself in a cage and you will never be controllable.   myxlfidian (150)

Tenons: These are the cork pads that firmly wedge the joints together. If worn or shrunk, a temporary fix is to apply a small amount of steam to swell the cork.   kellyjones00 (593)
